It is a widely publicised fact that over 90% of dieters fail to lose weight in the long term, this is because diets are far too restrictive for people to accept as a permanent feature of their lives. All changes to your diet should be permanent, so that your weight loss is permanent too.

So what changes can be made? You should be looking for multiple small changes to your eating habits, changes that are easy to make and and easy to keep to. A good rule of thumb is to ask yourself if you will be able to keep to the change for the rest of your life. If you answer yourself “no” then it’s probably better not to make the change in the first place, since any gains will be offset once you come away from the change. Try using skimmed milk, sugar substitutes, low-cal soda, in fact there are low-calorie alternatives for many of todays popular foods. Drink more water, eat more fresh fruit and veg. You know this stuff, it’s not rocket science, but it does need a commitment from you. Maybe today is the day?

No weight loss program can be succesful without exercise. Even the peddlers of fad diets maintain that their products will be largely ineffective without the addition of exercise. 7. Eat breakfast. You’ve heard it before, it’s old hat. That may be, but the indisputable statistical fact is that the vast majority of permanent weight-losers eat breakfast. So just DO IT!

8. DON’T cut out carbohydrates. Your body and brain need carbs (NOT from sugar!) so eat them, preferably with fiber, eg wholemeal bread and pasta, potatoes with the skin on.

9. Cut out fat. This is the most significant change you can make. Fat has a huge calorific value, so do your utmost to find alternatives. Yes, your body needs fat, but don’t worry, no matter how hard you try to eliminate it, thanks to today’s processed food environment you will always eat a degree of fat.

10. Don’t be impatient, you want to lose weight permanently, not lose weight fast. This is a long term program.

A scale is a must-have for every dieter.

Today’s hi-tech scales can give you more information relevant to your weight loss aside from your current weight. It can track water weight, body fat percentage and even the changes in your weekly weight.

Definitely pretty cool, if you ask me …..

(This is where I say, “wow, it would be cool if I actually owned one of those”.)

After all these years in weight loss land, I still had yet to purchase one of my own. Considering that I am so gungho about losing weight, it’s hard to believe that a scale wasn’t the first thing I purchased four years ago when I started my program.

My last weigh-in at the gym a couple of weeks ago had me thinking that I need something much more easy to use. A scale that preferably displays my weight in digital numbers that I can use in the privacy of my own home so I can weigh myself sans clothing.

I also wanted one that I didn’t have to read a whole how-to manual in order to make it work! How did a scale get so complicated? I’m sure one of these days someone will end up inventing a scale that will post your current weight loss automatically on social internet sites like Facebook.

I decided on purchasing a Conair Precision Weight Watchers Scale. It’s simple, precise, and gets to the point - my weight.

It’s my newest best friend. I weigh myself when I wake up. I weigh myself before workouts. I weigh myself before I eat …. before I go to sleep …. before I take a shower …. In fact, I don’t do anything else without weighing myself first.

I know I’m beginning to have serious dependency issues with my scale.

Consulting the manual for any tidbits on how to get out of this vicious cycle of weighing myself ten times a day, of course it has to say “DON’T OVERDUE IT” in big bold letters.

Then, it proceeds to tell me: “A surefire way to get overly concerned with your weight is to weigh yourself too often. Weigh yourself no more than once a week when you are dieting. Words of wisdom that all dieters should listen to.

I’ve learned a valuable lesson from this. In order to effectively monitor my weight, I will need to weigh myself once a week only, on the same day of the week at the same time of day. I will need to be consistent with that I wear during the weigh in and always use the same scale.

With all these fancy ideas I’ve picked up here and there on how to lose weight, I seem to have forgotten that nothing really beats counting calories.

Gone are my Jenny Craig and Weight Watcher days when I had to maintain a very strict diet to the point that I had to weigh my foods …. still, I should have paid more attention to the calorie counting portion of both programs.

I think I got duped into the modern way of thinking that cutting out carbs, going vegetarian or even taking diet supplements can give me the edge in losing weight. In fact, I now believe that this actually might have contributed to my weight loss plateau.

I found out a month ago that after two years, I was still paying for an online calorie counter that I never got to use. It’s about $8.00 every three months, so it flew under the radar on my credit card statements.

Since I was paid up until August, I decided to put it into good use. After doing a little bit of research, I set my daily calorie intake to 1200, which is recommended for fat burn enhancement based on my height and weight.

Here I thought that this will just be a piece of cake…. after all, I don’t eat carbs anymore and I’m practically off red meat. I should be able to meet that target with no problem.
