Starting with a pilot program serving over 500 students in three schools, Revolution Foods is setting itself apart from other school meal providers as the first to offer fresh and healthy meals on a daily basis. Revolution Foods’ meals are made with local, organic ingredients whenever possible, something other suppliers do not do. Within the next year, Revolution Foods hopes to serve healthy, fresh meals to over 10,000 students in public and private schools throughout Los Angeles County. With over 400 schools supporting three-quarters of a million students, Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) is the second largest district in the U.S.(i)
“We believe that all children deserve healthy, fresh food every day. Our goal is to serve as many students as we possibly can. Because Los Angeles is such a densely populated area with many public school students needing healthy food options, we believe we can make a positive difference here for kids, both academically and nutritionally,” says Kirsten Tobey, founder and chief operating officer of Revolution Foods.
Since it started serving healthy lunch, breakfast, and snacks everyday as well as incorporating practical nutrition tips into daily school life, Revolution Foods’ school partners have shared anecdotes of improvements in discipline both in class and on the playground, as well as increased levels of alertness in class, and weight loss among their student body. These trends are promising given rising rates of obesity in US K-12 youth. The prevalence of vending machines and other unregulated snacks in schools makes it challenging for kids to be healthy and perform well academically. Studies show that children under 18 are eating less than half the recommended amount of fruit and vegetable servings they should eat every day.(ii) Revolution Foods addresses this issue directly by incorporating fresh fruits and vegetables into every meal served.
“A well-balanced diet can be challenging for kids. We believe that healthy food choices are key drivers of wellness, education, and future productivity of our youth,” says Kristin Richmond, co-founder and chief executive officer.
Nutrition has been shown to link directly to academic achievement. Whether a child is undernourished or eats foods high in sugar, sodium andfat, the low energy and lack of focus that come as a result have an impact on a child’s ability to perform well in school.(iii)
With two gourmet chefs and a registered dietitian on staff, Revolution Foods offers a whole new approach to school meal service. The company provides educational tools to schools and parents, teaching them about healthy food options, nutritional information and at-home cooking tips to help maintain child health. In less than two years, Revolution Foods grew from serving three schools to over 40 across the state, about half of which are low-income.
The company also offers a line of organic branded products through its partnership with Whole Foods, including peanut butter, cereal and applesauce. The products are currently available in Whole Foods stores.

Thanks for dropping by!
It is good to see a company providing healthy meals. I noticed the quality of the school lunch programs took a dismal turn with the Reagan era, and have yet to recover. No wonder kids aren’t able to learn as they should.
Have you seen what they are usually fed?
Starting a Revolution: Revolution Foods is the First Company to Bring Fresh, Healthy School Lunches to Los Angeles Students…
Revolution Foods (http://www.revolutionfoods.com), a company less than two years old with a mission to provide fresh, healthy meals to K-12 schoolchildren each day, announces it is bringing its revolution to Los Angeles County….
yes! I’m so please to see a company do this. I followed Jamie Oliver’s tv program when he tried to do the same in UK. It was interesting to see how much the kids improved with proper food.
This is awesome! I would love to see something like this offered at our local schools. The main reason I do not let my son get school lunches is due to the quality of the food.
I have seen lunches here, that consisted of a set of 4 cheese sticks and a little cup of marinara sauce. The box clearly stated “snack food” on the side.
It is just awful!
Our local school sure could also benefit from something such as this. I think that this is awesome and hope to see the idea expand to other school districts. This is such an important issues that should be addressed.
I remember when I was in school, the lunches were just terrible. They looked like they were about a week old, tasted awful, and usually consisted of lots of fatty foods. I salute Revolution for what they are doing!
SageMother, I don’t have much recollection about my school cafeterias….. probably because I never ate much there.
Too busy doing other things that sometimes I really forgot to eat.
MrsH, I saw the same tv show!
I thought it was such a terrific show, especially when the students held a dinner for some parliament dignitaries!
That’s just too bad that the US took so long to get with the program. Maybe it has something to do with big endorsements from junk food companies?
What I never understood is it is crap food and so expensive. School lunches are no way cheap anymore that’s for sure.
EviesEarth, well…. it doesn’t seem that the public system is getting better in any way shape or form…. but it’s good to know that at least all the bad influences that can encourage obesity at schools are almost gone.
I am not sure if this is the same in the US, but most canadian school systems just recently took all the pop vending machines out.
SageMother, oh, I’m not sure my stomach really would be to happy eating cheese sticks with a side of marinara sauce.
When I think of cafeteria food, I think of sloppy joes. Eventhough they are my favourite, I wouldn’t want to eat it everyday.
Tater03, I can see this concept moving to other school districts and states, that’s for sure.
But whether, school lunches can stay within our budget…. now, that’s a different story.
Calypso, I skipped lunches at school, unless of course, they were serving Sloppy Joes!
