The January scenario
What do a mother-of-two 50-plusser and a graying granny of 69 have in common? They both made a New Year’s resolution to get in shape, January is almost gone, and they haven’t done it yet. But help is here. You can see them both trying hard with the guidance of enthusiastic trainer Laura Spiegel in “Getting Started” — a newly released GEN PLUS DVD. It’s a workout specially designed for those over 50 who need kind and motivational encouragement to do their best to get in shape. This is where bend and stretch meets 50 Plus.
“Getting Started” Gets People Started!
“When I took a look at the exercise programs available to the 50 Plus market,” says Gen Plus founder Wendy Spiegel, “I wasn’t surprised to find very little that addressed the real needs of those who wanted to get into shape the most. The reality is that looking at a buff instructor and an already up-to-speed class of students going through a perfect workout routine is discouraging for many of us. So I decided to create a homegrown, living room program for the average person over 50 who finds it hard to self-motivate physically.” Off the record, Wendy confides that she was forced into activity herself when her seven-year-old daughter thought she was supposed to make a grunting sound (”Ooofff,” just like Mummy) whenever she got up from the floor.
There ARE muscles under that fat!
Veteran trainer Laura Spiegel (yes, Wendy’s sister) has designed a full body, 27-minute workout specifically for those 50 years and older. There is no floor work, the routine is low impact, all exercises are done in a standing position, and exercise modifications are shown so that Gen Plussers can increase the aerobic activity as they need to do so. “Even congenital couch potatoes and weekend exercisers can get started with our workout routine,” Laura promises.
Can anyone say Gastroxnemious ten times…fast?
Laura provides warm, authentic encouragement to her viewers, with an introduction chock full of information on exercise and interesting tidbits throughout the routine that appeal to both Boomer and Senior populations. “A little endorphin surge does wonders for the self-esteem of the 50-plus demographic,” Wendy adds with a smile, “and the at-home participant laboring along with our aging exercisers will likely breathe a sigh of relief and chuckle, ‘Heck, if they can do it, I can do it, too.’”
